Making with the Winter Cottage

Begin with what is already close at hand: brown paper, old cards, lengths of string, fabric scraps, fallen twigs, dried peel and modest cuttings from the garden. Each project includes alternatives so that buying something new is rarely the only choice.

Make the Bundles

Gather Lightly

Take only small amounts of abundant material, use garden prunings where possible and never strip a living tree. Avoid gathering from protected places or land where permission has not been given.

Keep the Hearth Safe

Dried greenery, paper, fabric and fruit can burn readily. Keep all decorations well away from flames, hot bulbs, radiators and fireplaces, and consider curious paws before choosing where to hang them.
