You Will Need

  • About 100–150g chunky yarn
  • 6.5mm knitting needles
  • One large button, around 25–35mm
  • A yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • A tape measure
  • Optional: crochet hook for a button loop

Finished Size

  • Approximately 18cm wide
  • Approximately 62–68cm long
  • Designed to cross comfortably at the front
  • Add or remove rows to suit the wearer
  • Measure around the neck before finishing where possible

Gauge is not critical for this project, but the fabric should feel soft and flexible rather than stiff. Knit a small sample first if you are unsure how your chosen yarn behaves.

The Simple Garter-Stitch Pattern

Knit every row to create a soft, textured fabric that lies flat and is ideal for a first project.

  1. Cast onCast on 24 stitches using your preferred method. This should create a piece around 17–19cm wide with most chunky yarns.
  2. Knit the bodyKnit every stitch of every row until the piece measures approximately 62–68cm, or until it wraps comfortably around the wearer’s neck with the ends overlapping at the front.
  3. Check the fitHold or pin the ends in place before casting off. The warmer should sit comfortably without pulling tightly across the throat.
  4. Cast offCast off loosely so the final edge remains as flexible as the rest of the knitting.
  5. Weave in the endsUse a yarn needle to weave each loose end securely into the wrong side of the fabric.
  6. Position the buttonOverlap the ends in the way you want the warmer to sit. Mark the best place for the button, then sew it securely through several stitches.
  7. Add a simple button loopMake a short crochet chain, plait several strands of yarn or stitch a firm loop at the opposite edge. Check it fits snugly over the button before fastening it securely.
  8. Finish gentlyLightly block the neck warmer according to the yarn label, then allow it to dry completely before wearing or wrapping.

Make sure the neck warmer sits comfortably and is not tight around the throat. Use securely attached buttons, and avoid small loose decorations on gifts for young children.
